There are circumstances where regular dental treatment is impossible and is considered “torture ” for the patient as well as for the dentist
DENTAL TREATMENT UNDER GENERAL ANESTHESIA
“Non cooperative” patient:
- Young children
- Fears & phobias
- Psychological limitations
- Physical limitations- for example:
inability to keep the
mouth open for a
considerable period of time
Special situations preventing “regular” treatment:
- Strong “gag reflex”
- Increased sensitivity to pain
- Allergy to local anesthesia materials
- Long operations, complicated dental implantations
- Necessity to finish an extensive treatment plan within a limited period of time
- Desire of the patient to complete the entire treatment in one session
The advantages of the treatment under general anesthesia:
- Multiple and complicated procedures completed within
several hours - The patient has no recollection of “what went on”
- Absence of fear, pain and psychological trauma
- Ideal conditions for a quality dentistry are achieved, as the dental team has no need to control patient’s behavior
