Historically, for thousands of years, dentistry wasn’t a separate profession.  Until the 18th C. it was a part of a general medicine . The healers were priests or monks, who also performed all the surgery including dental treatment and extractions. Early dental instruments were developed by them as well.

The monks gladly practiced dentistry because it was highly profitable .
However  in 1163  the Pope felt that the clergy was paying more attention to business than to service. So he published a decree forbidding priests to touch blood.
The priests were allowed to continue with general medicine, but all the surgery and dental extractions were delegated to barbers because of their skills with scissors and razors.
The healers were divided to the Physicians (upper class) and the Barber – Surgeons (lower class).
In fact- from that time on, anyone who could handle a plier was allowed and did pull teeth:
surgeon- barber, travelling toothdrawer, just barber, blacksmith, jeweler, country doctor,  midwife, surgeon, bloodletter, pharmacist, bath owner and his wife. And so did every marketplace quack.
The prestige of the dentistry crashed and so the social status of the dentists.
It began to rise again towards the end of 17th and into the 18th C., especially thanks to the work of prominent French surgeon  Pierre Fauchard ( 1678-1761 ) .Fauchard is considered a father of the modern dentistry. He introduced many innovations and created a concept of Le Chirurgien Dentiste  (Dental surgeon), entirely separating Dental specialists from Barber Surgeons.

(Pierre Fauchard ( 1678-1761 . Barber Surgeon .
